VAR has created four errors so far throughout the Premier League season, referees’ Mike Riley has confessed.
The examples, which include Fabian Schar’s equaliser for Newcastle against Watford and Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans’ clear postage on the Callum Wilson of Bournemouth, were discussed in Thursday’s assembly of Premier League shareholders.
Both of the other mistakes were the referee’s decision to not award Manchester City a penalty when Jefferson Lerma stood David Silva’s foot in the Bournemouth box and a decision not to give West Ham a punishment after Sebastien Haller was brought down by Norwich’s Tom Trybull.
Riley, the managing director of this elite refereeing body, PGMOL Ltd, told Sky Sports News:”We’re learning as we move along and we are constantly improving.
“Out of the four match rounds, there have been some really good examples where we have intervened.
“There were incidents where VAR has suggested that the referee and we have a better choice consequently.
“There were four incidents where VAR did not intervene and had they done, we would have a better understanding of the function VAR plays at the game.
“[The errors ] are about the judgement of VAR and the process that we adopt.
“All these are examples were VAR could have had a benefit and intervened to help the referee daily.”
When pressed why those mistakes were created, Riley added:”A mixture of factors. That’s the thing because this project evolves, and we’re continuously learning.
“We’re trying to not interrupt the flow of this game but on such events, the judgement must have been it was a very clear and obvious error.
“One of the very positive things about the initial four match rounds has become the caliber of on-field performances.
“All the referees have incorporated what we need to do with VAR into their refereeing whilst focusing on producing real-time decisions”
