British number one Johanna Konta says she’s”a whole lot to smile about” after her latest Grand Slam bid ended in a US Open quarter-final conquer.
Konta made the previous eight but dropped 6-4.
The entire world 16 attained the Wimbledon quarter-finals and the French Open semi-finals before this year.
“It’s wonderful to feel that I have still got room to just get better from the game,” Konta, 28, explained.
According to her Grand Slam results, she added:”It’s the best I’ve done so far in my career so there is a lot to be proud of that point.
“It is only part of the sport – only 1 man ends up not dropping, everyone else does shed sooner or later.”
Konta almost dropped towards the end of the past season out of the world’s leading 50 and at the end of April following a disappointing start to the year where she didn’t advance past the third round of a championship.
But a fine season culminated in a jolt run to the French Open last four – in odds with her form on the face – and she backed up that with further runs deep runs in Wimbledon and the US Open.
But she couldn’t replicate her win over Czech third seed Karolina Pliskova from world number five Svitolina, that outclassed her Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday.
“Obviously, I wanted to go one step further and be in the semi-finals and the final, and lifting the prize,” Konta explained.
“I think I definitely need to look at the good things I did, the terrific games I played and the challenging opponents I conquer and take great things in the tough competitor who I lost to.
“The season isn’t completed, I am happy with how I feel I am getting better throughout the entire year.
“I still feel like I’m evolving and growing and only advancing.”
Her performance at Flushing Meadows will be likely to lift her into 11th place in the world rankings when they are published next Monday and when she could continue her great form during the upcoming few months she could still stake a claim to get a debut place at the WTA Finals – the season-ending tournament for the year’s best eight players at Shenzhen, China.
“I’d like for that to be a part of my program,” Konta stated. “However, there are so many moving variables for this. So many things are contingent on how other men and women are doing.”
