As he won his next stage of the race dutchman Mathieu van der Poel extended his overall lead in the Tour of Britain.
Van der Poel, 24, driven clear of primary rival Matteo Trentin in the final phases of the uphill finish.
He leads Trentin by 12 seconds from the classification heading into Saturday’s last phase.
“Everybody hurt their legs now,” he told ITV Sport,”and tomorrow will be different.”
As Van der Poel surged clear britain’s Ben Swift tried to establish a late assault but was overhauled.
It seemed as though the Italian, as they approached the last 100m, when the hill levelled off sitting Van der Poel’s wheel, was to leap the world cyclocross winner.
But if Van der Poel kicked for the next time Trentin was unable to react, promptly shaking his head as the Dutchman appeared obvious, subsequently giving his nemesis the thumbs up in admiration of his skill, prior to spreading his arms wide in a’what can I do?’ Gesture’ since he crossed the line many bike lengths behind.
Australian Simon Clarke directed the reduced peloton behind Van der Poel throughout the line three seconds.
The concluding stage starts in Altrincham and ends in central Manchester 166km after.
