MNF Extra: Arsenal’s capitulation against Watford was a reminder of their defensive flawsPCMAX

The latest MNF Extra, with Jamie Carragher, seems at Arsenal’s defensive battles and inquires: Are they ever learn?
Arsenal’s capitulation against Watford on Sunday was the most recent reminder of the problems that continue to hamper them. In the long run, despite having attained they have been fortunate to emerge from Vicarage Road with a stage.
That defeat was averted by them , however, is very little consolation to angry Arsenal fans who’ve seen it. A trip to the bottom side of the Premier League ought to have been a relatively straight-forward assignment. Rather, Arsenal made another masterclass .
On this event, the main offenders were Sokratis Papastathopoulos, whose poor move from inside his box allowed Tom Cleverley to evaluate Watford’s first target, and his centre-back partner David Luiz, who surrendered the punishment for the equaliser when he brought down Roberto Pereyra.
“For a long time, going back to when I was a kid, Arsenal were called a really solid group,” Jamie Carragher tells MNF Extra. “They’ve gone completely the other way. They are a team you expect things that are dumb to occur. When they’re 2-0 up, you can never be convinced by them.
“I think Liverpool had a similar problem a few years back, below Brendan Rodgers and at the start beneath Jurgen Klopp. No matter what the situation has been, you felt something could fail. What’s worrying for Arsenal is the fact that it is occurring again in Emery’s next season”
The individual mistakes have been a theme of the Spaniard’s tenure. Emery was charged with improving the defence of Arsenal when he was appointed last summer, but since then they have made 14 mistakes leading to opposition objectives and conceded 10 penalties, placing them top among Premier League sides in both categories.
Relegated Fulham are the only side who come close to the complete of Arsenal for errors – they left 12 season – but even more worrying for the Gunners is that three sides have faced more shots on target. The statistics point to defensive frailties that are deep-rooted.
The problems have been exacerbated by Arsenal’s struggles when playing out from the back. Emery’s side were not able to play through Watford’s press on Sunday, their determination to perform with goal that is short kicks finally costing them a goal, and it wasn’t the time.
According the complex metrics of Opta, Arsenal have surrendered 34 turnovers that were high this year. Surprisingly, that is seven more than another Premier League side. They are currently inviting resistance pressure and frequently paying the cost by losing possession close to their goal.
In part, the problems return to personnel. “Emery inherited poor defenders,” adds Carragher. “He has tried to proceed on Shkodran Mustafi, who made a lot of mistakes, but in David Luiz they’ve signed an additional defender who makes mistakes and in Sokratis, the club have brought in someone else who is not at the level where they need him.
“I can understand the registering of David Luiz because he was cheap and they wanted somebody, but I’m not his biggest fan and also to give away two penalties in four different games is not a wonderful start in any respect. The problem is, that won’t change, regardless of who the supervisor is. David Luiz has had plenty of supervisors and he has always had the exact issues.”
However, the man has been placed by Sunday’s game . Emery isn’t aided by Arsenal’s error-prone defenders, however their flaws are being vulnerable instead of protected.
On Sunday, Arsenal supporters were able to wonder if they should have been protecting their direct why Emery turned into Reiss Nelson, 19, 20, also Joe Willock. A midfield which was struggling suddenly became more stretched and Watford took good advantage, subjecting the visitors.
Not having organisation and discipline in midfield was summed up from the passage of play which led to the equaliser of Watford. Arsenal were 10 minutes away from victory, and Lucas Torreira their midfielder, was among five red-shirted players stationed within the Watford box as soon as an assault broke down along with the hosts sprang forward.
David Luiz chose the blame because of his succeeding foul on Pereyra, however while it’s a fact that the Brazilian has always been prone to lapses of focus, it needs to be pointed out that he only conceded three penalties. In Arsenal, he is not being given anything like the identical amount of security.
“Sunday was unbelievable in how open it was,” says Carragher. “You don’t see many matches like this. It had been embarrassing for Arsenal it was to perform them. They looked like they couldn’t run. You only have to look at that second half and also you are able to understand that the equilibrium of that team isn’t perfect.”
These structural issues do not reflect on Emery along with the traveling supporters at Vicarage Road made their frustrations clear when they booed the choice.
“It was not a fantastic day for Emery in relation to how he is seen by the Arsenal fans,” adds Carragher. “I feel this is a big season for him. At the season you receive a little bit of leeway, and I would still say that they had a good season, but I believe folks will be looking more in the coach than the players.
“People asked him at the end of last season if they missed out on the top , and they are questioning him again now. Can matters change? Could he change the method to enhance them? These players he is working with now are mostly players he has earned, so it is down to him to begin getting results with them.”
Arsenal will have more options in defence when Rob Holding Hector Bellerin and registering Kieran Tierney come back from injury. They will be bolstered by William Saliba’s arrival from Saint Etienne. However, their problems run deeper than humans. Evidence indicates they’re no closer to understanding the lessons of yesteryear.
