Dwyane Wade dance with the Heat will not help them escape the NBA’s waist. Neither will the season of this post-Wade era.
Miami has been hungry for star power in the last couple of decades, sending only two agents to the All-Star Game over the past 3 seasons–one as an injury replacement (Goran Dragic), another on a special invitation in the commissioner (Wade). Even though Josh Richardson, Justise Winslow and Bam Adebayo have all taken steps forward this year, none has always displayed elite potential.
This class has too much ability to base out, which type of rebuild does not interest team president Pat Riley anyway. The Heat have been loose with their draft selections during his tenure, hence the reason they’re outside a future and four of the next five second-rounders.
But when the draft doesn’t deliver a star, it is hard to tell which route this franchise may take. There’s no true spending cash until 2020, and trade chips come few and far between, given how many bloated contracts are about the books.
