As Cyrname conducted a brilliant victor in the Christy 1965 Chase out at Ascot altior suffered his first defeat jumps.
Unbeaten in 19 begins over hurdles and fences combined, Nicky Hendersons double Queen Mother Champion Chase hero Altior was the rage to make it 20 wins on the spin, together with his army of fans moved a favorite away.
The Paul Nicholls-trained Cyrname finished last season as the chaser at Britain – 1lb over Altior – following two wins over distance and this course, but was easy to back in 5-2.
With the other runner Solomon Grey not a variable, it turned into a two-horse race from off the street, with Harry Cobden sending Cyrname straight to the direct and Nico de Boinville sitting on his tail aboard Altior, that was racing over further than two and a thousand miles for the very first time.
It was Cyrname who made the slicker leaps, as the pace increased racing down the back straight – and De Boinville had been the animated of the two riders before the home turn.
Altior did his very best to bridge the gap in the right, but Cyrname refused to allow up and a two-and-a-quarter-length success was sealed by a flying leap at the final fence.
